Snoop Lion – Reincarnated

Snoop Lion – Reincarnated

Snoop says in the opening track “Rebel Way”, “I just want to be loved while I’m here”. I believe this is indicative of Snoop’s entire career, he’s just wants our attention. First he did this by being a soft-spoken yet dangerous gangsta rapper who was accused of murdering people, and again when he made his pop conversion as a pimp. Snoop’s always tried to provoke and seek attention, whether he’s being a rapper at an indie rock festival to changing his name a second time and becoming a rastafarian.

This album is really good if you’re one of those people that like beats and production. The Jamaican Reggae production is well performed. The dark bass-y riff on “Boulevard” hits hard, giving the song a broken down alley feel. However Snoop’s voice is the main problem, Snoop’s natural inflection isn’t very sing-song-y, but on this album his voice is too unnatural and treated. The Jamaican artists outdo Snoop on every track they’re on, and even Busta steals the show with his fast paced delivery augmented with fake Patois on “Remedy”. The presence of American pop musicians is also largely disappointing, aside from Busta’s Patois, Drake and Miley and Chris Brown just don’t have any ounce of reggae in them. I feel that the production isn’t enough to save the fact that Snoop Dogg is the weakest part of his own album. I give this album a 6/10.
